Aesthetics vrs accuracy, I posted this question up a few years ago, eg.so who would want to keep an original stormtrooper helmet in it's current state,
cracked paint. Who would want to restore it back to it's original look. If you had an MPP flash stem would you put the bent nail in it.

Wouldnt have the guts to modify anything screen used but anything same as is fair game to get the end result of an accurate prop !! Happily drilled holes in a
hengstler counter and graflex flash tube and sawd sterling mags in half

As a bit of a history fan I'd keep anything as it is, as it shows it's past. Even if that past meant some idiot put a Star Wars sticker across the back
of the helmet, as happened a few years ago.
If I want something that looks like it did on screen I'd go for a replica. As a friend of yours once said: It ain't the years honey it's the mileage!

I would never drill in a found item. In most cases (such as in the case of Hengstler counter, Graflex flash tube) there are ways to make the prop look accurate
without permanently damaging the found part.
If I had that Luke ROTJ lightsaber, I would get or build a control-box, but glue it on with a friendly glue so that it can be removed later if I want to. I made a bent nail for my MPP-based Vader-lightsaber, but it was only fake. I go for realism first, over aesthetics or accuracy to the real prop. I don't want my blasters to flash a light when I pull the trigger, but to behave as if the clip is empty. I prefer metal over resin any time.
