Rogue Trooper's equipment, scratchbuilt |
Lead | ||
|
Hello everyone! Rogue Trooper has been another fav character of mine from 2000AD so after receiving Helm (rogue's helmet) as a birthday present some time
ago I decided to build the other 2 pieces, Gunnar and Bagman (gun & bagpack). Here are some current WIP pics of Gunnar and a pic of Rogue i'm using for
reference, enjoy!

Looking good so far , what are you planning to use for the shroud part of gunnar?

Thanks, i'll be using MDF to shroud the gun, i've already cut the pieces out, just need to attach tomorrow. Making the curved sections on the side will
be a bit of a challenge and will feature a lens and electronics so they light up. Not sure at the moment whether to paint the shroud brown, green or a camo
look. I will try these colours on some paper and wrap it around the shroud temporarily to see how it looks before I decide and paint it on. Bagman will take a
bit longer to make as I will probably go with the Computer Game look as I feel the comic look seems a bit plain. The computer game look has lots of great
features on the outside as well as featuring a working robotic arm within Bagman which comes out the side. This is something else I want to incorporate in the
build with other lights and electronics also.

Sounds great , shall look forward to seeing how this one progresses.
looking at the pics you could even use styrene sheet for the shroud as it would be lighter for trooping in and bends easily with a little heat on it . I was also thinking this might be of use. i made a prop for a competition earlier this year and the mag is similar to gunnars. i used MDF in layers to get the grooves in it and it worked out well

Love your magazine, good idea with using layers, looks great. I was thinking about using a similar idea or routing the grooves into the wood. I did think of
using styrene or even flexiable foam for the shroud but in the end chose to use MDF as I wanted a chunky and durable look to it. All that wood gives it added
weight which then feels as if it is a real rifle.

Here are 2 pics with the shroud on, just need to round the bottom edges and smaller end of the gun. Looking at these pic's now i'm not overly happy
with the proportion of the magazine in relation to the gun, might have to make it chunkier. What are your thoughts?

Yeah agreed ,going by the pic you posted it could be wider and a little longer. Are you going to round off the edges of the mdf to get a curved appearance ?
Fast progress there , looking good

Yes, I will finish rounding the edges off and will also widen and lengthen the magazine. I will probably paint the magazine the same as the barrel, a
distressed silver look. I found painting the barrel a base coat of black then stippling with chrome enamel gave a good distressed effect. Anymore items that
you have done Tangodfett that you can post some pic's of, what i've seen so far look great!

Cheers mate , there should be a few here already if you have a look. I do the black basecoat route same as you , seems quicker than the way some do by spraying
silver first then black and sanding it through. I also get an old piece of flanel and spray the silver on it ,then rub it over the black here and there , you
can get a good effect with practice.
Here's a picof the one i used that mag on , its mostly MDF as well

I'll have a look through through the forum but love the pic of the gun, is that style from a movie or one you made up? I'll be doing some more work on
the gun tomorrow so hope to post some more pic's shortly! I'll give the old flannel a go to!!

Its my own design, it was for the blaster builders club scratchbuild competition last year , got 2nd place so was well chuffed
If you look at the E11 tutorials there is a longer explanation of the flannel technique gotta think of a better description than that !
Here's another showing how its held as its a bit of a weird shape !

Great design and creativity, it's never easy making something from nothing but 2nd place deserved i'm sure. I like the way it's fastened to the
arm, helps redistribute the weight so it's not all on the wrist so it's practical too. I'll check out the E11 tutorials on the 'old
flannel' lol
cracks me up when it's described like that!

Some more progress pic's for you to have a look at, it's coming along nicely. Needs some filling and sanding here and there as well as the curved
pieces on each side. After all this time I still don't know what the curved pieces on the gun are used for or what they do, can anyone enlighten me

Looking good there, I always imaged the side pieces were some sort of sensors, maybe infra red or even targetting devices.

Yes, I received a similar answer on the RPF forum, be crafting these soon, just making the scope that sits on top of the gun at the mo! Received your email,
sent you one back!!

Coming along fine, mine is almost ready for the shroud,i'm going for the origanal Dave Gibbons design with a more rounded look to the shroud.still no idea
how i'm going to make the side sensor/sights,playing arpund with a removable bio-chip.It's funny how many sites we all seem to be on,i'm madmax on
here ,the bbc, seen tangod's work (haven't logged on for a while),the rpf and the mega city justice board, small world
![]() ![]() You should check out the blaster builder's site ,if
you want to make a e11,theres no better place to go,also a member called Patrick made the most awesome pulse rifle from scratch ever![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice one madmax, looking forward to seeing pic's of your build.
I
thought about having a removable bio chip also but didn't want to worry about it falling off or losing it so i've decided to glue mine on, good luck on
finding a way to do it. The sensors on the side are gonna be a bit tricky but since i've just about finished the scope that's the next thing for me to
do and I have a few idea's to try out. It is indeed a small world
and great to see you and Tangod Fett on other forums. I'll check out the blaster builders site, sounds very good!!

Thanks for the tips guys, i'll be sure to check the sites out
. I
have some more progress pic's of Gunnar. I have built and attached the side sensors as well as building and painting the gun sight. After looking at the
previous pic's and proportion of the flash muzzle in relation to the gun I realised the diameter of it wasn't big enough. So, I scrapped it and built a
bigger better one which I think looks much better, just need to add trim to the end of the gun where my hand goes in then it's painting time!
I wanted to add electronics to the sensors so they light up but with the space i've got and because I want to keep things simple i've decided against it. I'll have my hands full enough with electronics when I start to build Bagman anyway ![]() . I'll probably insert a red reflective lens in it's place instead!!

More pic's, almost done, at least you can see the size of the rifle when it's being held. It feels as heavy as a real rifle to, just the lenses on the
sides to add now!
