Same technique as always, save this time it's been fibreglassed for added strength. I'm quite chuffed with it as it's not truned out too badly.

New Dredd bucket |

Well some may know I've been playing around in making my own Dredd helmets....First was in the style of Mike McMahon and this new one is in the style
somewhat of Henry Flint as I've squashed the repirator emblem a tad...One thing that I always wanted though was a working one...With a pull down
respirator...So after a couple of weeks of building and planning I did just that.

Very nice work!
Do you have any other pictures? Or of other helmets? Fiberglass helmets are interesting, and I was wondering how you got the helmet curved so smoothly. |

A lot of elbow grease and pwer sanders and sand paper, u til I moved to the final sanding with wet and dry paper... Hope this helps...If you need to check out
some more of my lids just look for boba fett bucket there's a thread on her with it on...Though that's not fibre glass but card baord with body filler
and a lot of sanding to make it smooth.
The initial construction is from card board then a Lay a mixture of f/g resin and body filler <a 50/50 mix> over the dome and then I sand away like a silly bugger until it gets smooth, then the top coat is usually sopt putt to fill in any dings or divots or sometimes even poly filla <spakle paste> and then I sand that to a fine finish...The card I use is like the stuff you get off the backs of a4 paper pad refills and it's very absorbant and take sthe f/g lass resin right into it re-inforcing it. I initally got the ideas and templates for my boba bucket from the dented helmet and used Wizard of Flights templates and this tachnique to make the lid...I've since use the same sort of technique to make two dredd lids and am working ona few others for an origianl short film. Once this is finished I'll put up the painted pics.

There you can see the pic of my first dredd lid...Very basic construction principles but sound none the less...the bottom pic is my Boba fett lid made using Wizard of flight's templates. I use Blender which is a free 3d program to model the lids I make now as I can make blue prints from the 3d design...Then you can put the mesh into a program called pepakura and unfold it to make templates...Or as in the case of the Dredd lid you can simply eyball it.

Very interesting, and thanks for showing and telling some secrets. I also am planning a movie shoot (one day) and need 3 Starship Trooper futuristic army type
helmets for a rescue crew marrooned on a dangerous planet. At night big bats the size of dogs come out.
Originally I wrote that there was six crew on the mission, three military with General Electric rifles and three science/ medical who they were suposed to protect. I have expierence with fiberglass, but never made a helmet. After I read your thread I read a story about the guy who made the original Star Wars Storm trooper helmets and body armor being hasseled by Lucas for continuing to mold them for himself and selling them.. I like how you did the strips over the top to get a reasonably round shape to begin with. It's going to look great with some paint on it. What is your movie going to be like? You can strike it rich with a camcorder. You just gotta make it, then sell it.

Oh it's nothing Major just a small short in a very Film Noir style, so either shot in B/W or with very muted tones.
If you want go onto youtube and look for a vid called fun and freetime...It's a guy called feather weight who does some serious cosplay props using card and hot glue...I kid you not it's the dogs down belows The hardest thing about maikng helmets is as you said getting the dome good and smooth...Though if you're after a starship troopers style helmet a few dents won't be frowned on...I'd sit down with pen and paper and thiink about what the helmet is meant to be designed for, will it need to be open faced or a full on Master Chief style full face affair...Then simply sketch out a few doodles...I've done this with the latest batch of film props I've made...Simple ideas and simple materials...The one thing I've learnt on making and helping make films bith amateur and in a semi pro fashioon is the budget is your limiting factor...If like most people you're limitied by your unds use what you have at hand...Card is abundant and I'm surrently designing a set piece using it as it will only be on screen for seconds so I'm not blowing money on something fancy. look at me I'm rambling. More pics as I get closer to finishing Joe's lid.

I like talking about movies.
OK, what is the first Stallone Judge movie called? I want to watch it. It was "Judge Dredd" right? Was there a second one? I'm going to share some of my projects here, I'm just getting to know the board. My history I have shipped over 75 fiberglass Star Trek phasers around the world, still mold them. I made 12 kits of 66" fiberglass TOS Enterprise starships as well as built 2 myself. My wife called them "The Ultimate" since I added steelplates to the hull to make more surface detail. I made friends and enemies with that ship kit. I still have the molds. And my current project is a 36" fiberglass kit Serenity Firefly model I named the "Full Afterburner". The negitive guys at RPF hounded me until I got banned for next to nothing. I actually could say nothing at RPF, or it COULD be misconstrued as baiting or trolling. Good riddance to those types of losers, who would amazingly turn in a fellow modeler for his hobby work. I had a guy do that! Wrote the studio about RShanko, "he's selling stuff on ebay". This is too bad, but I'll never miss RPF because of this. If they offer to lift my ban tommorrow, I'll not post anything again anyway because of the twits. So I'm interested in making friends, hearing your ideas and sharing mine. So you can go on all you want, it's a fun topic. Ron |

I may just do that. Though wiht the things I've got going on, housekeeping on here and the tutorials for scratch building and budget building I'd like
to get done, when that will be I don't know. Plus I've been asked to write a short article for a modelling mag too...Oh and several short films that
could use my attention too, and that's just the hobby side of things let alone my Job and Union position now and course work it's never ending.
Rshanko, feel free to post up a couple of threads when you find your feet on here, we love to see new things especially scratch built stuff.

Just an update, as things seemed to stop derad in their tracks with work and other filming commitments getting in the way of getting a leg up on this.
Anyway I've moulded and produced a couple. and did a few rush slush cast lids...One needs a touch of ffilling for a final smooth finish and then that will get remoulded and a I will be doing a fibreglass version of them. This lot though are platic.

Here we are in their trimmed state.
Less spot filling than I thought would be needed so I'm happy with that.
Totem pole anyone?

mmm yummy
was watching re-run of the stallone movie the other nite - which made me realise why I liked the comic so much more rofl only thing that really stands out is the green elbow/knee pads - although I did remember seeing someone with that cossie; and he did manage to pull it off as it was going for comic accuracy rather than real-life accuracy

Though I did like the art work. Currnetly building the repirators for these now. then it'll be off to the paint booth...I've been toying with a beaten
up weathered version so whatch this space and see how beat up.
